The Legend of Zelda franchise may be getting a new 2D game in 2027, according to one leaker. An upcoming live-action movie and widespread rumors of an Ocarina of Time remake have brought a lot of attention to the beloved fantasy series in its 40th year. Now it sounds like those may not be the only Zelda projects in the pipeline, and this new rumored entry could do something completely unexpected.
Expectations have been high for Zelda‘s 40th anniversary, especially after a string of strong recent releases, and so far, things are looking promising. Apart from the movie, there could be a full remake of Ocarina of Time coming this holiday season, with this leak seeming increasingly likely as time goes on, and other leaked details get confirmed. Now, a new leaker has entered the chat, and on top of corroborating these earlier Ocarina rumors, they have suggested that Zelda fans will get yet another game before too long.
Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake Reveal Plans Leaked
A new rumor claims Nintendo may be preparing to reveal a full Ocarina of Time remake very soon, with Monolith Soft reportedly involved.
Leaker Claims 2D Zelda Game is Coming in 2027, Possibly Centering Around Ganondorf
Leaker Nash Weedle touched on multiple rumors in a May 6 podcast, including the new claim that Nintendo is working on a 2D Zelda game to release sometime in 2027. According to Nash, the game, codenamed Bernard, will be co-developed by Nintendo and Grezzo, like 2024’s Echoes of Wisdom, and more interestingly, might follow Ganondorf as a protagonist. While he did not say this was guaranteed, he elaborated that Grezzo codenamed Echoes and its Link’s Awakening remake after European kings with ties to wisdom and courage, respectively. So, the production name Bernard could be a tie to power, as King Bernard of Italy is most known for a plot to rebel against Emperor Louis I, and Ganondorf is often portrayed as the wielder of the Triforce of Power. It’s a fairly loose connection, but some fans have pointed out before how Ganondorf is arguably amore interesting character than Link, so it could be a nice twist on the series if this is true.

Nash Weedle appeared more confident in other potential details about the game. The leaker expressed how a 2027 release date is possible because the game will reuse the same engine as the previous two 2D Zelda games. That would make sense, as Echoes of Wisdom was one of 2024’s highest-rated games, so using the same building blocks for a new title seems like a safe bet for Nintendo. As for when it could get announced, Nash predicted Nintendo would wait until after the rumored Ocarina of Time remake comes out before unveiling this new game.
As with all rumors, fans should avoid taking these details as absolute truth. While Nash Weedle has correctly predicted Resident Evil 7‘s Switch 2 release, among other developments, he does not have a spotless track record. The leaker has made plenty of other predictions that have not come true, and a Ganondorf-centric Zelda game does seem like a bold claim, although Nintendo has shown in recent titles that it’s not afraid to break from series convention. Whatever the reality may be, fans won’t know either way until Nintendo itself releases more information.

As for official news on future Zelda games, things are relatively murky. Series producer Eiji Aonuma has said Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment may inspire the next Zelda title, but it’s unclear what exactly that means. Most news from the studio has focused on the upcoming movie, but more games are certain to follow at some point, even if it’s uncertain what these will entail.
