Nintendo Switch Online Adds 5 More Games for Subscribers

Nintendo Switch Online subscribers with the Expansion Pack upgrade now have some more games to play, as the Virtual Boy catalog was expanded by five games. The new titles added to the Nintendo Switch Online catalog include Jack Bros., V-Tetris, and Space Invaders Virtual Collection.

Periodically, Nintendo offers a random selection of classic games for Switch Online subscribers to play via the Nintendo Classics app lineup. While some apps, such as the NES, SNES, and Game Boy apps, are available to all Switch Online users, other console apps, including the Virtual Boy and the N64, require the additional Expansion Pack upgrade to play. The previous Nintendo Switch Online update took place in early April, and saw the release of Pac-Man, Mendel Palace, and The Tower of Drauga on the NES: Nintendo Classics app.

A plot to blow up Nintendo’s headquarters in Kyoto, Japan has been thwarted after police arrest a man suspected to be the lone perpetrator.

The Virtual Boy: Nintendo Classics App Now Has 14 Total Entries

Now, the Virtual Boy game lineup that Nintendo Switch Online subscribers can play has grown from nine to 14. The Virtual Boy: Nintendo Classics app now includes Jack Bros., V-Tetris, Space Invaders Virtual Collection, Virtual Bowling, and Vertical Force. To start, Jack Bros. is a spin-off of the Megami Tensei series from Atlus. Jack Bros. puts players in control of three demons; Jack Frost, Jack Pumpkin, and Jack Skelton, as they race against time to head back to their world. However, fans looking to play some familiar titles on the Virtual Boy are in luck. V-Tetris allows players to experience classic Tetris action with some unique twists to the level designs. By comparison, Space Invaders Virtual Collection includes direct ports of Space Invaders and Space Invaders Part 2.

Games Available on the Virtual Boy: Nintendo Classics App

  • Jack Bros.
  • Space Invaders Virtual Collection
  • V-Tetris
  • Vertical Force
  • Virtual Bowling
  • 3-D Tetris
  • Galactic Pinball
  • Golf
  • The Mansion of Innsmouth
  • Mario’s Tennis
  • Mario Clash
  • Red Alarm
  • Teleroboxer
  • Virtual Boy Wario Land

Space Invaders Virtual Collection comes with time attack and score attack gameplay modes for players to challenge. True to its name, Virtual Bowling offers a tenpin bowling experience, though precise timing with the game’s gauge system is crucial to success. Finally, Vertical Force is a scrolling shoot-em-up where players must take down enemy starships. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion pack subscribers must first download and install the latest Virtual Boy app update to play these new titles.

The previous Virtual Boy game release on NSO took place on Mario Day, as Mario’s Tennis and Mario Clash were added to the growing lineup. However, playing the Virtual Boy app on Switch and Switch 2 has an additional requirement. Alongside spending $50 on an annual NSO + Expansion Pack subscription, users must also purchase a physical Virtual Boy headset or cardboard cutout from the Nintendo Store, respectively priced at $99.99 and $24.99. The headset allows users to insert their Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 console and experience Virtual Boy games through its lenses. However, users can also opt for the cardboard version as a cheaper alternative. Otherwise, it is impossible to play Virtual Boy games on Nintendo’s current-gen hardware.

Though five new games are now available from the Virtual Boy lineup, Nintendo still has a few surprises left for fans to collect. Additional Virtual Boy games, such as D-HOPPER and ZERO RACERS, will be available later in 2026. Despite the fact that the Virtual Boy is considered a rare failure from Nintendo, that has not stopped the gaming giant from using the Switch Online to preserve part of its history.
