Pokemon Champions Players Are Disappointed with Season 2, But It’s Not All Bad News

Pokemon Champions disappoints fans yet again with the release of Season M-2, but there may be a silver lining for next Season on June 17. There was a lot of hype surrounding Pokemon Champions‘ release last month, but when it finally became available to play, fans noticed that it was much emptier than they had expected. The game only had a handful of basic held items, mainly Berries and some low-power things like type-boosting items. Likewise, it only featured fewer than 200 Pokemon total.

This is a problem that has no other solution than adding more items and Pokemon, and while launching with so few of each is not necessarily a bad thing, keeping the same meta going for two full seasons is not ideal, either. For this reason, many fans were hoping that today, May 13, would be a turning point for the lackluster Pokedex in Pokemon Champions with the addition of extra items and Pokemon tied to the launch of a new season, but this wasn’t the case.

Pokemon Champions May Finally Add New Pokemon on June 17

Pokemon Champions‘ Season M-2 doesn’t add anything to the game other than a new battle pass, but next season may fix this based on official information from launch. In an official roadmap from Pokemon Champions‘ launch, it was stated that “Placements are tallied each season,” which was specifically pointed to Season M-2, possibly to indicate that no new items or Pokemon would appear. However, it also states that “New Pokemon may be added” in Regulation M-B, which is the next set of rules for Pokemon Champions.

This regulation will go live on June 17, which is also when Pokemon Champions‘ current season ends. Pokemon Legends: Z-A‘s Season 11 follows the same logic, starting today, on the same day that Season 10 ended. This would mean that, based on that early roadmap, it’s very likely that some new things will be added to Regulation M-B. The roadmap does state “may be added,” though, so it’s not definitive just yet. Based on the reception of Pokemon Champions on launch, adding new Pokemon seems the next logical step for the game if it wants to introduce some variety to the meta and actually serve its purpose as a live-service battling hub.

Not adding new Pokemon, or just a small selection of critters, may not be too bad if the developers go a bit heavy-handed with new items. For example, Assault Vest would transform the meta entirely because it would make some Pokemon like non-Mega Tyranitar be very strong, and others like Archaludon and Kingambit rise in power even more. Furthermore, the current meta heavily revolves around flinching moves like Fake Out and Rock Slide to force opponents to miss a turn, so it would be very beneficial to add Covert Cloak to Pokemon Champions.

This is because Covert Cloak removes all secondary effects from attacks, making the user immune to flinching or statuses like burn from Heat Wave and Scald or freeze from Blizzard and Ice Beam. New Pokemon like Ursaluna would greatly benefit archetypes like Trick Room teams in Pokemon Champions, and the same would go for new Mega Evolutions from Pokemon Legends: Z-A that could reshape the meta with new abilities. For now, it’s not guaranteed any of this will happen, but the launch roadmap makes it very likely.
