Pokemon's Gen 10 Plans Are Missing a Very Important Part of the Franchise Formula

Despite the lack of official information regarding Pokemon Winds and Waves and Gen 10 as a whole after the initial reveal trailer on Pokemon Day, several alleged leaks surfaced online about what’s going to happen with these games and even afterward. For example, Pokemon Winds and Waves‘ leaked map has been online for several days now, showing the entire archipelago for the Gen 10 games, including various locations, biomes, and Gyms. Not only that, though, but there were also leaks that detailed what kind of games are currently in full production or pre-production for the series beyond just Pokemon Winds and Waves.

This alleged leak is all but surprising, as Pokemon Winds and Waves have been in the works for years now, and the TeraLeak from last year even included early concept pictures of a Pokemon Legends game for the Galar region. Gen 11 is also in pre-production, according to this leak, showing how deep these long-term plans are supposed to go. An important detail that transpires from the current plans for Gen 10 is the fact that no remakes are seemingly being worked on. This may seem like a logical next step for the series after BDSP were outsourced to ILCA, but it’s further confirmation that Gen 5 is getting the short end of the stick.

It’s The End of an Era for Pokemon Games

Pokemon remakes have long been a tradition for the series, to the point that Gen 5 remakes were a huge talking point throughout the entirety of Gen 9’s lifespan. Fans expected them to be next in line after Gen 4 got remakes before Gen 9 even came out, but they never came. One could argue that The Indigo Disk DLC was a tribute to Unova and Gen 5 games as a whole, but it’s far from a remake.

Based on a leak from Centro Leaks, there are four releases in full production at Game Freak and two games in pre-production. These are:

Pokemon Winds and Waves (full production, rumored to be finished)
Pokemon Pokopia DLC, with Omega Force co-developing it (full production, rumored to launch between the end of 2026 and the start of 2027)
Pokemon Winds and Waves DLC (full production, most likely a 2028 release)
Pokemon Legends Galar game, if the TeraLeak documents are true (full production, could be a 2028 or 2029 release)
Pokemon Project Seed, an MMO game with the four Japanese regions so far (pre-production, was detailed in the TeraLeak)
Pokemon Gen 11 (pre-production)

If this leak is true, then there are a few things to consider. Pokemon Winds and Waves will launch in late 2027, based on recent leaks, stating that there will be no news this year. Assuming this is also true, it means that the games in production are planned for at least a few years ahead, possibly until 2031 or later. The fact that no remakes are on the list doesn’t automatically mean this trend is over for good, but it makes its resurrection very unlikely.

Say Goodbye to Pokemon Gen 5 Remakes

There are a few reasons why it’s now very unlikely to ever see Pokemon Gen 5 remakes after this leak, assuming it’s legit. These are:

Considering that Pokemon BDSP‘s reception was very poor, it’s unlikely that future remakes will be outsourced again, risking the same fate.
Pokemon Gen 5 remakes were not part of the TeraLeak, nor were they part of any recent leak from proven sources.
Pokemon remakes are typically released in between major games to ease the wait for them while also reviving older regions. The fact that no remakes are currently in the works or have been announced gives more credence to their discontinuation.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A‘s Mega Evolutions allowed Game Freak to explore an older region and battle gimmick without relying on remakes, so future Legends games may end up covering Gen 5 and do away with remakes.

The only saving grace for Pokemon remakes is that they will be outsourced again, despite BDSP’s performance, and that’s why they are not on the list of games currently in production. This is not impossible, but even if it is, it would mean that Game Freak-made remakes are almost guaranteed never to return, which is sad in and of itself. As such, if you’re hoping for Pokemon Black and White remakes or sequels, you should temper your expectations.
