The Worst Game Ever Is Officially Getting a Sequel on May 22, And I’m So Ready

The label of “worst game ever” gets thrown around way too haphazardly. That accolade must be earned, and almost no other disasterpiece has a tighter stranglehold on the throne than Bubsy 3D. While dozens of great PS1 games have faded from our collective consciousness, this bobcat’s legend continues to echo throughout the decades, even sparking a few revivals in the 2010s. On May 22, 2026, Bubsy 3D will finally get a proper sequel: Bubsy 4D.

The wait is over, the time is now, and redemption is near.

The natural reaction to such a project is to throw out the “meme” label; after all, that is Bubsy 3D‘s entire existence nowadays. I completely understand that perspective, as my initial reaction was similar. That said, video game development is long and tiring, and no relatively prominent team puts resources into a title solely to elicit a laugh or an eye roll. No, Bubsy 4D is a real effort to right the wrongs of the past. After playing the demo, that might be possible.

In fact, I’m going to make a bold prediction: Bubsy 4D will be one of 2026’s best 3D platformers.

Bubsy 4D Is By Fabraz, And The Developer Has Pedigree

Swapping A Demon For A Bobcat

  • Fabraz previously worked on Demon Turf and Demon Tides

Bubsy has spent its entire life jumping from developer to developer, and the bobcat seems to drag all creators down to their level rather than the other way round. Infamously, Bubsy 3D was developed by Eidetic, which would go on to become Bend Studio and create Syphon Filter and Days Gone. The first failed revival, 2017’s Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back, was devised by the studio behind the Giana Sisters games, and Twisted Dreams is a great 2D platformer. The second failed revival, Bubsy: Paws on Fire!, was handled by Choice Provisions, which is mostly known for the Bit.Trip series.

As history has shown that a developer’s history or future has no bearing on a game’s quality, why will Bubsy 4D be any different? Well, for one thing, Fabraz specializes in 3D platformers, with Demon Turf being a really fun indie take on the concept. While none of the developer’s releases were extreme hits, they are nearly all well-liked, with the most recent release (Demon Tides) earning a 96% average on Steam.

Bubsy 4D is entirely in Fabraz’s wheelhouse, both in terms of gameplay and visuals. Rather than adapting to the franchise’s needs, Fabraz seems to be molding Bubsy 4D to fit its legacy.

Best Triple-A Platformers That Aren’t Mario

Mario may be a household name in the triple-a platformer space, but these other games show that the genre is ripe for plumber-free experimentation.

The Bubsy 4D Demo Has Three Levels And Has Been Around Since October 2025

A Real Show Of Confidence

  • The demo also has a tutorial, along with three full stages.
  • After finishing the levels, my save file showed 16% complete.

A demo is a statement. Whenever a developer decides to release one, they are saying that they believe in their work. Bubsy 4D‘s demo has been on Steam since October 2025, and it is still up for anybody who wants to try it (and I recommend doing so). That is roughly 8 months before the full release, and it is even available nowadays on consoles for anybody who prefers those systems. The demo will expire on May 22, so give it a go while you have a chance.

The demo just goes through the first hour or so of the campaign, covering the tutorial and the first three stages. Honestly, Fabraz could have gotten away with just including the tutorial since it does a great job of introducing the tight controls and movement mechanics, and this stage’s aesthetic is a fun throwback to Bubsy 3D. However, the decision to also include the first few stages was the right one, as they showcase Bubsy 4D‘s vibrant worlds, open but still linear level design, and the mechanics’ fluidity. The game is just fun to play.

Bubsy 4D Is Just Fun To Play

This Point Bears Repeating

  • The basic moves include hairball, double jump, floating, and homing attack.
  • Bubsy has quite a few unlockable advanced moves.

I’m going to be Captain Obvious here, but platformers need to feel good. Super Mario Odyssey and A Hat in Time are masterpieces because their fundamentals are so strong that simply messing about within their world is satisfying. Will Bubsy 4D be on the level? Probably not, but it still nails its core mechanics, while also fixing the legendarily bad controls of Bubsy 3D.

That PS1 “classic” has the “greatest” floaty controls of all time, to the point that it is actually the worst part of the game and not the visuals or level design. Bubsy 4D turns this into a mechanic by introducing a glide that lets the bobcat float across absurd distances, as long as the jump has the necessary momentum. The demo stages consist of islands separated by deadly water, and part of the challenge is surviving the journey.

Although he can also run, Bubsy can turn into a hairball, enabling him to cover large distances quickly and roll along half pipes. This mechanic takes some getting used to, especially since knowing when to deactivate it is crucial, but the furrball can reach some incredible speeds and pull off some impressive transitions, especially once players unlock a few of Bubsy’s special moves (which are purchased from a store).

Speaking of speed, Bubsy’s main attack sees him torpedo towards enemies, similar to Sonic’s homing attack. Combat seems to be a minor part of the campaign, but it works well enough.

Yeah, But What About The Story? I Need That Bubsy Magioc

A Planet-Hopping Adventure That Should Be Purrfect (For The Genre)

Bubsy has never exactly been known for its storytelling, and the upcoming one won’t be any different. That said, I found the premise to be charming enough, as it is a play on the franchise’s standard formula. Historically, Bubsy’s main enemies have been the Woolies, an alien race that kidnaps sheep.

That marks the starting point of the story, but Bubsy 4D quickly introduces a twist when the sheep return as superpowered versions of themselves and steal Bubsy’s Golden Fleece, forcing the bobcat and his crew to travel to different planets to collect them. Yeah, it is silly, but the game completely leans into that, which makes the humor land a bit better. The demo’s cutscenes primarily (but not exclusively) use the in-game graphics engine and are well animated for the most part.

Every PS5 Platformer That Is Actually A Masterpiece

Hop, blast, and grind your way through these PS5 platformers that are so good and addictive that they’ve earned the title of masterpiece.

Bubsy In The Fourth Dimension

Why Bubsy In The Fourth Dimension?

  • I mean, what else could you call a sequel to Bubsy 3D? Bubsy 3D 2? The New Bubsy 3D? Bubsy 3D Again?

Finally, we should probably answer why Fabraz went with Bubsy 4D. Well, Bubsy 3D is far and away the most famous entry in the series, and leaning into that infamy is smarter than underplaying it. This is the franchise’s second attempt at a 3D platformer, and the name instantly lets players know what type of game they will be playing. Right now, Bubsy 4D has more to gain from associating with Bubsy 3D than the 2010s reboots, which are underwhelming but not legendarily so.

Still, Fabraz didn’t just pick this name for its legacy, and the “4D” aspect is represented in another way: self-reference. Yeah, Bubsy 4D occasionally breaks the fourth wall, with Bubsy and his friends seemingly knowing that they exist in a game. I will say, these comments are not extremely common or obnoxious in the demo, and they are mostly just cute nods to the 1996 trainwreck. As far as I can tell, the story doesn’t involve time travel, which would add another 4D element; however, that might be introduced later in the story.
